We’re delighted to share that we, Marie & Brian Leask – the husband-and-wife team behind Seabirds-and-Seals – The Noss Boat – completed the updated WiSe Scheme training course back in March 2025, renewing our accreditation as responsible marine wildlife tour operators.
For those unfamiliar, the WiSe Scheme (Wildlife Safe) is the UK’s national training programme focused on minimising disturbance to marine wildlife. It provides essential guidance for anyone working on or around the water—wildlife cruise operators like ourselves, dive boats, yacht skippers, kayakers, paddle boarders, wild swimmers, and others who have the privilege of encountering marine life up close.
Why We Chose the WiSe Scheme
Back in March 2022, we first completed the Standard WiSe online training course. As part of maintaining this valuable accreditation, it’s a requirement to complete a refresher every three years, along with the additional Adventure WiSe module. These courses are now conveniently combined into one and delivered over two evening sessions, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Huge thanks to the WiSe team for their excellent content and delivery!
A Core Part of Our Ethos
From the very beginning of Seabirds-and-Seals, we’ve believed in operating our tours in a way that respects, protects, and celebrates Shetland’s incredible wildlife. As passionate nature lovers and wildlife tourism operators, conservation has always been at the heart of what we do.
We don’t just take people on boat tours—we aim to inspire, educate, and lead by example. Our responsibility to the marine life we encounter is something we take seriously. That’s why we’ve made a firm commitment to responsible tourism practices, including:
Why Minimising Disturbance Matters
The waters around the UK are home to an incredible variety of marine species. While spotting seabirds, seals, dolphins and other wildlife can be a magical experience, it’s crucial that these interactions are done responsibly.
Even well-meaning approaches can lead to stress, displacement, or injury if animals are disturbed while resting, feeding, breeding, or nurturing their young. That’s why training like the WiSe Scheme is so important—it equips operators like us with the knowledge and skills to interact with wildlife in a safe and respectful manner.
Leading the Way
As WiSe-accredited operators, we are proud to demonstrate best practice every time we set sail. With thousands of passengers joining us annually, we see every trip as an opportunity to not only showcase Shetland’s natural beauty, but to promote a deeper understanding of marine conservation and why it matters.
We’re deeply grateful for the WiSe Scheme’s continued support and guidance, and we look forward to many more seasons of wildlife adventures—done the right way.
