At Noss Boat Tours, we’re always excited to share Shetland’s incredible wildlife with you.  But now, we’ve got something extra special to keep you cozy while you enjoy the sights – our brand-new hand-knitted Puffin & Gannet headbands!
Crafted with 100% Shetland wool, these stunning headbands are inspired by the seabirds we love and are now available to try on as samples aboard our tours. Whether you’re a Puffin enthusiast or a Gannet admirer, these beautiful designs are perfect for staying warm in Shetland’s fresh sea breeze.

Jess Finan has been knitting for 15 years, but it was her love of wildlife in Northern Scotland that inspired her to knit what she saw. The beautiful diving gannets, puffins and arctic terns, soaring white tailed eagles and fulmar are woven into these unique items. She uses the traditional fair isle technique originating from Northern Scotland to knit using multiple colours and yarn strands simultaneously. These hats and headbands are hand knitted using wool from Shetland sheep, a hybrid of ancient neolithic Scottish and viking breeds. The quality of this wool was improved by the Sinclair family who owned the majority of Caithness lands for hundreds of years. Shetland wool was already being used to produce woolens for the royal family, and had become famous for its’ warmth and comfort. In the 18th century, Sir John Sinclair popularised it following selective breeding and a treatment of the wool, still used today to remove the longer, coarser guard hairs that makes other wool itchy. Shetland wool is still considered some of the finest wool in the world because of Caithness.We’re thrilled to showcase the craftmanship of talented knitters like Jessica, who found inspiration for her Gannet headband during her Noss Boat Tour with us.  Marie, our very own team member, can personally vouch for these headbands’ cosiness – just check out the photo below where she models the Gannet one, a cherished gift from Jessica herself!
